The Floyd Rose Special R-2 locking nut clamps the strings at the headstock end of the neck, taking the tuning load off the tuning machines once the fine tuners are set. Without a functioning locking nut, the bridge fine tuners have no useful range and the system will not hold pitch through hard use of the arm. This is a direct replacement unit for the Floyd Rose Special tremolo series.

Fit is determined by two things: the width of your nut slot and your fretboard radius. Floyd Rose sizes its nuts by width — R-2, R-3, R-4 and so on — and those sizes are not interchangeable. Too narrow and the outer strings crowd the fretboard edge; too wide and the nut will not drop into the slot. Radius matters equally: a nut that is too flat for your board will leave the outer strings sitting proud of the clamping surface and buzzing no matter how hard you tighten the block screws. Measure your existing nut before ordering. Do not rely on the guitar model name alone — the same model has shipped with different nut widths across production runs.

The nut is made from spot-hardened steel with a satin chrome finish, matching the hardware spec of the Floyd Rose Special series. Spot hardening at the string contact points resists the wear that comes from repeated clamping cycles without making the whole unit brittle.
