The Floyd Rose Special R-3 locking nut clamps the strings at the headstock end of the neck, taking string tension out of the tuner posts and giving the bridge sole control over pitch. Without a functioning locking nut, a floating tremolo system cannot stay in tune under use. This is a direct replacement for the R-3 nut on Floyd Rose Special series bridges.
Fit is decided by two measurements: the width of your nut slot and the radius of your fretboard. Floyd Rose sizes its locking nuts by a width code — R2, R3, R4 and so on — and R-3 is a specific width, not a universal fit. If the nut is too narrow, the outer strings crowd the fretboard edge; if the radius is wrong, the outer strings sit proud of the clamping blocks and the nut cannot lock them evenly. Neither problem goes away with setup adjustments. Measure your existing nut before ordering. Do not guess from the model name.
The nut body is spot-hardened steel with a satin chrome finish. Spot hardening concentrates the hardness at the string contact points and clamping surfaces — the areas that take the most wear — without making the whole part brittle. The satin chrome finish matches the Floyd Rose Special hardware line.
If you are not certain the R-3 width is correct for your guitar, send us the make, model and year and we will check it against what we have on the bench.
