This is the locking nut for the Floyd Rose Special tremolo system. It clamps the strings at the headstock end of the neck, taking them out of the tuning equation once the fine tuners are set. Without a functioning locking nut, the floating bridge cannot hold pitch under dive-bomb or pull-up use — the strings walk at the headstock instead of staying fixed.
Fit is decided by two measurements, not the guitar model name. The nut has to match the width of your nut slot and the radius of your fretboard. Floyd Rose designates these widths by code — R2, R3, R4 and so on. This is the R2. Too flat a radius and the outer strings sit proud of the nut surface and buzz; too narrow and the strings crowd the fretboard edge. Measure the nut slot width on your actual guitar before ordering. Do not guess from the model name — the same production model has shipped with different nut sizes across different years and regions.
Made from spot-hardened steel with a gold finish. The spot-hardening targets the string contact points specifically, which is where the clamping blocks do their work and where soft steel wears fastest. This part is in the Special series, and is a direct replacement for the original locking nut on Floyd Rose Special-equipped guitars carrying the R2 size.
If you are not certain the R2 is the right width for your neck, send us the make, model and year of your guitar and we will check it against what we have on the bench.
