The locking nut clamps the strings at the headstock end of the neck, removing them from the tuning machine circuit once the bridge is set to pitch. Without a solid clamp here, a floating tremolo cannot hold tune — any slip at the nut undoes what the fine tuners are trying to correct. This is a Floyd Rose Special series R-2 locking nut in black, part FRS2NR2BP, made from spot-hardened steel.

Fit is decided by two things: the width of your nut slot and the radius of your fretboard. Floyd Rose sizes its nuts by width — R2, R3, R4 and so on — and those sizes are not interchangeable. A nut that is too narrow crowds the outer strings toward the fretboard edge; a nut with too flat a radius leaves the outer strings sitting proud of the saddle, causing buzz that no setup will fix. The R-2 designation here refers to a specific width. Do not order by guitar model or by what looks right in a photo — measure the existing nut before you order.

The clamping blocks are spot-hardened steel, which resists wear at the contact points where string tension and repeated clamping do the most damage. A soft block compresses over time and loses grip; hardened steel holds its geometry.
