The locking nut that clamps your strings at the headstock end of the neck. When the clamping blocks come down, the string is fixed at that point and tuning stability shifts entirely to the bridge — this is what makes a floating tremolo system work. This is a Floyd Rose Special-series R-3 nut in black, made from spot-hardened steel.

Getting this wrong costs you a buzzing nut that cannot be corrected with setup. A locking nut has to match both the width of your neck at the nut slot and the radius of your fretboard. Too flat a radius and the outer strings sit proud of the clamping blocks; too narrow and the strings crowd off the fretboard edge. Floyd Rose sizes its nuts in the R-series — R2, R3, R4 and so on — by width. The model name of your guitar does not tell you which size you need. Measure the nut slot width on your existing nut before ordering.

Spot-hardened steel means the clamping surfaces are hard where they contact the string, which resists the wear that soft steel shows after repeated block removal and retightening.
