The Floyd Rose Original R-9 locking nut clamps the strings at the headstock end of the neck, cutting the headstock out of the tuning equation entirely. When the nut is locked, string tension changes from bending or the tremolo arm are handled by the bridge saddle locks alone. A nut that slips, strips, or was never the right size to begin with is the first place to look when a Floyd-equipped guitar won't hold pitch.

Fit is decided by two measurements: the width of the nut slot on your neck, and the fretboard radius. Floyd Rose sizes its nuts by width — R2, R3, R4, R9, and so on — and those designations do not translate reliably from one guitar model to another, even on the same brand. A nut that is too narrow crowds the outer strings toward the edge of the fretboard; one with the wrong radius leaves the outer strings sitting proud, which buzzes no matter how carefully you set it up. Before ordering, measure the existing nut. Do not guess from the model name.

This is a Floyd Rose Original series nut, made from hardened steel with a gold finish. It is compatible with Original, Pro, Non-Fine Tuner, and Hot Rod series Floyd Rose tremolos. Hardened steel resists the clamping force of the bolts over years of use; softer alloys in cheaper nuts strip at the screw seats and lose clamping pressure gradually, which shows up as tuning drift that seems to come from nowhere.
