The Floyd Rose Original R-9 locking nut clamps the strings at the headstock end of the neck, removing the tuning peg from the equation once the bridge is set. Without a functioning locking nut, a floating tremolo system cannot hold pitch — the nut is the fixed anchor point the whole system depends on. Fit is decided by two things: the width of the nut slot in your neck, and the fretboard radius. Floyd Rose sizes its nuts by width designation — R2, R3, R4, R9, and so on — and those designations are not interchangeable. A nut that is too flat for your radius will leave the outer strings sitting proud of the clamping blocks; too narrow and the strings will crowd the fretboard edge. Neither gives you a clean clamp. Measure the existing nut before ordering. Do not rely on the guitar model name alone — the same model has shipped with different nut widths across production runs.

The nut is hardened steel throughout. This matters because the clamping screws bear down directly on the string, and soft metal deforms at the saddle contact point over time, which causes uneven clamping pressure and tuning drift.
