The Floyd Rose Original R-2 locking nut clamps the strings at the headstock end of the neck, removing that anchor point from the tuning equation entirely. Once the clamp blocks are tightened, string tension is held between the locking nut and the fine tuners at the bridge — the standard tuners do nothing. A nut that does not lock correctly is the first place a Floyd Rose system loses pitch stability.

Fit is decided by two measurements: the width of your nut slot and the radius of your fretboard. Floyd Rose sizes its nuts by width — R2, R3, R4 and so on — and those sizes are not interchangeable. Too narrow and the outer strings crowd the fretboard edge. Too flat a radius and the outer strings sit proud of the saddle, buzzing no matter how much you adjust. Measure the nut slot on your guitar before ordering. Do not go by model name alone; manufacturers have used different nut widths on the same model across production runs.

Hardened steel resists the deformation that soft metal nuts develop at the string contact points — deformation that lets strings shift under the clamp blocks and pull the system out of tune.
