The Floyd Rose Original R-4 locking nut clamps the strings at the headstock end of the neck, cutting the string path from nut to tuner out of the equation entirely. Once the blocks are torqued down, tuning changes at the peghead do nothing — all pitch work happens at the fine tuners on the bridge. This is the Black finish version, part number FRNR4BP, in the Original series. It is hardened steel.
Fit is decided by two things: the width of your nut slot and the radius of your fretboard. Neither is forgivable if you get it wrong. Too flat a radius and the outer strings sit proud of the nut surface and buzz; too narrow and the strings crowd the fretboard edge. Floyd Rose sizes its nuts in an R-number series — R2, R3, R4 and so on — and those numbers correspond to specific slot widths. The R4 is one width in that range. Do not order from the guitar model name. Pull the existing nut, measure the slot width and check the fretboard radius before you order.
Hardened steel resists the deformation that soft nut material develops over years of string changes and heavy tremolo use — the clamping blocks seat consistently and the saddle faces stay true. If you are replacing a nut that has developed uneven clamping or stripped block screw threads, inspect the mounting holes in the neck at the same time.
If you are not certain the R4 is the right size for your guitar, send us the make, model and year and we will confirm before you order.
