Ibanez built the AR420VLS as part of the AR Series, a line that drew on the company's hollowbody and carved-top heritage to produce a set-neck electric positioned above the entry-level AR tiers. The VLS suffix designated the Violin Sunburst finish. The guitar carried a flamed maple top over an Okoume body, paired with a three-piece maple neck joined via Ibanez's set-in construction with a smooth heel joint.
The bound Jatoba fretboard ran 22 medium frets at a 305mm radius, with acrylic and abalone block inlays. Nut width measured 43mm, widening to 57mm at the 22nd fret; neck thickness ran 20mm at the first fret and 22mm at the ninth. Scale length was 628mm (24.7"). Hardware throughout was finished in gold, comprising a Gibraltar Performer bridge with 10.5mm string spacing and a Quik Change Classic tailpiece. Two passive, Alnico-loaded Super 58 humbuckers — one at the neck, one at the bridge — handled pickup duties. The guitar left the factory strung with D'Addario EXL110s (.010–.046) in standard E tuning.
