Ibanez built the S521BBS as part of the S Series line, a range designed around the thinly contoured, lightweight body format that defined the S family's place in the Ibanez catalogue. The S521 sat in the mid-tier of the series, offering the core S Series construction and hardware package at an accessible point in the line.
The guitar was constructed with a Meranti body and a Wizard III Maple neck, a profile Ibanez developed for fast, low-fatigue playing. The Jatoba fretboard carries 24 jumbo frets with off-set white dot inlays, a 400mm radius, and a nut width of 43mm. Neck thickness measures 19mm at the first fret and 21mm at the twelfth. The 648mm (25.5") scale length feeds into an F106 bridge with 10.5mm string spacing. Electronics consist of a pair of passive, ceramic-magnet Quantum humbuckers — one at the neck, one at the bridge — with all hardware finished in cosmo black. The guitar left the factory strung with D'Addario EXL110s (.010–.046) in standard E tuning.
