Ibanez built the SR500ESBD as part of the SR (Soundgear) Series, positioning it as a mid-tier four-string electric bass within a line long associated with slim, fast-playing necks and active electronics. The Surreal Black Dual Fade finish identified this specific variant within the SR500E family.
The bass was constructed with an Okoume body and a five-piece Jatoba/Walnut neck — a laminated construction intended to add rigidity to the SR4 neck profile. The Jatoba fretboard carried abalone oval inlays across 24 medium frets at a 305mm radius, with a 38mm plastic nut. Scale length was 864mm (34 inches). Hardware was finished in black throughout, anchored by an Accu-cast B500 bridge at 19mm string spacing. Passive Bartolini BH2 pickups occupied both the neck and bridge positions, fed into an Ibanez Custom Electronics 3-band EQ with an EQ bypass switch — placing passive tone control on the treble pot — and a 3-way mid-frequency switch. The instrument left the factory strung with D'Addario EXL165 strings (.045/.065/.085/.105) in standard E–A–D–G tuning.
