Ibanez built the SR400EQMSKG as part of the SR (Soundgear) Series, positioning it as a passive-pickup bass with active EQ — a configuration aimed at players who wanted tonal flexibility without the full commitment to active electronics. The quilted maple top over a nyatoh body gave the instrument its Surreal Black Burst Gloss visual identity, while the five-piece maple/walnut SR4 neck was characteristic of the broader SR line's emphasis on a fast, slim profile.
