Ibanez positioned the BTB846VABL within the BTB Workshop Series as a six-string electric bass built around a neck-through construction. The BTB Workshop Series represented Ibanez's approach to offering extended-range basses with premium tonewoods and active electronics at a dedicated workshop-tier specification.
The neck is a five-piece Maple and Walnut neck-through design reinforced with graphite rods, carrying a Jatoba fretboard with abalone dot inlays, 24 medium stainless steel frets, and a zero fret. Nut width measures 54mm, widening to 85mm at the 24th fret; neck thickness runs 20mm at the first fret and 22mm at the twelfth, with a 950mm radius. The 33-inch (838mm) scale runs at 16.5mm string spacing at the MR5S bridge. The body pairs a Poplar Burl top with an Ash and Okoume wing construction. Pickups are a pair of passive Bartolini BH2 units routed through an Ibanez Custom Electronics 3-band EQ. Hardware throughout is finished in black. The instrument left the factory strung with D'Addario NYXL32130SL strings (.032/.045/.065/.080/.100/.130) in B–E–A–D–G–C tuning.
Owners sourcing replacement parts — including the MR5S bridge saddles, Bartolini BH2-compatible pickups, or stainless steel fretwire matched to the medium profile — are advised to consult a qualified guitar technician or luthier who can confirm fit against the instrument's measured dimensions before ordering.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
