Ibanez built the AFR5PBPDTF as part of the AFR Series, a five-string electric bass centred on a half-through-neck construction with a three-piece Maple neck reinforced by graphite rods. The instrument occupied a position in the line defined by acoustic-electric versatility, pairing a passive magnetic pickup with an active piezo system.
The neck runs through a Maple body topped with Poplar Burl and Walnut, and the Ebony fretboard carries 24 medium frets with Premium fret edge treatment and an abalone off-set dot inlay at the 12th fret. The AeroSilk MR5 bridge sets string spacing at 19mm over a 34-inch scale. Pickup configuration centres on a Bartolini X55JX passive middle pickup, managed through an Ibanez 2-band EQ with a separate Piezo active tone control — an arrangement that allows the owner to blend magnetic and piezo signals independently. Hardware is finished in black throughout. Nut width measures 40mm, widening to 60mm at the 24th fret, with neck thickness of 20mm at the first fret and 22mm at the 12th, across a 400mm radius fretboard. The instrument shipped strung with D'Addario EXL165 strings gauged .045/.065/.085/.105/.130 in standard five-string tuning B–E–A–D–G.
Owners seeking replacement bridge saddles, Bartolini-compatible pickup covers, or setup assistance with the piezo blend circuit should consult a qualified guitar technician familiar with active-passive hybrid bass systems.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
