- Brown Sunburst High Gloss
Ibanez built the M522SBS as an F-style mandolin finished in Brown Sunburst High Gloss, positioning it as a solid-top entry in their mandolin catalogue. The instrument featured a solid Sitka spruce top paired with flamed maple back and sides, a combination Ibanez selected to balance projection with tonal clarity.
The maple neck carries a purpleheart fretboard with acrylic block inlays across 24 frets, and a flat radius across the board. Nut width measures 30mm at the nut, with a neck thickness of 22.5mm at the first fret and 24.5mm at the seventh. Scale length is 350mm. Both the bridge and saddle are purpleheart, and the plastic nut seats a 10mm string spacing. The instrument shipped strung with a .010/.014/.024/.034 set in standard mandolin tuning (G–D–A–E). Gold mandolin tuners with acrylic buttons handle tuning duties. Overall body length runs 13¾ inches, with a maximum body depth of 1¾ inches and a lower bout width of 10¼ inches.
Owners sourcing replacement parts — particularly purpleheart saddles, bridges, or period-matched tuners with acrylic buttons — should consult a qualified luthier or experienced instrument technician, as fit and intonation setup will depend on precise measurement against the original components.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
