Schecter built the Michael Anthony MA-4 as a signature bass for Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, positioning it within the USA MonsterTone pickup series. The instrument was produced in South Korea and configured as a four-string, right-handed, bolt-on construction bass finished in Gloss Natural with a flat-top body of Swamp Ash topped with Koa, bound in black single-ply binding.
The neck is a multi-ply Maple/Walnut construction in a Thin 'C' profile, measuring .787" at the first fret and .866" at the twelfth, mounted to a Rosewood fretboard with a 12" radius, 21 X-Jumbo frets, and Pearloid Dot inlays. The nut is a Graph Tech XL Black Tusq unit at 1.496" width, and the truss rod is a two-way adjustable design adjusted via a 5/32" Allen nut. Hardware throughout is black, including the WSC THD4 bass bridge and WSC KG400 tuners. Pickups are a Schecter USA MonsterTone-P™ (MA) at the neck and a Schecter USA MonsterTone-J™ (MA) at the bridge, controlled by a volume, tone, and 3-way switch arrangement with metal knurled set-screw knobs. The instrument ships strung with Ernie Ball 4 String Super Long #2849 (.045–.105).
Owners requiring setup work, fret maintenance, or pickup adjustments on this instrument should consult a qualified guitar technician or luthier; the 34" scale and 38mm nut width are useful reference points when sourcing compatible strings, nuts, or bridge components.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
