Hagstrom introduced the Viking Bass as the Concord bass in 1965, positioning it as a semi-hollow electric bass built around a short 30.75-inch scale. The model carried the Viking® name and sat within Hagstrom's hollowbody-influenced bass line.
The Viking Bass is built with a contoured top and a set neck fitted with Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod. The fingerboard is Resinator™ material, carries pearl block inlays, and is cut to a 15" radius with 21 medium jumbo frets. The nut is a GraphTech Black Tusq XL unit at 40 mm width. Two Dyna Rail - Viking® Bass pickups are controlled by a 6-way rotary switch that selects between neck and bridge in humbucking and single-coil (outer coil) configurations, individually and in combination, for six discrete pickup voicings. Two volume and two tone controls complete the electronics. The bridge is a long-travel Tune-O-Matic paired with a Hagstrom trapeze tailpiece, and tuning is handled by Hagstrom-design 17:1 ratio machines. The instrument ships strung with .45–.95 gauge strings.
