Hagstrom produced the Viking Bass as a left-handed semi-hollow electric bass, tracing the model's lineage to the Concord bass introduced in 1965. The Viking Bass occupied a distinct position in Hagstrom's catalogue as a short-scale semi-hollow instrument, pairing a classic aesthetic with the tonal flexibility more commonly associated with later design thinking.
The bass was built around a set neck with Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod and a Resinator™ fingerboard featuring pearl block inlays across 21 medium jumbo frets. The 30.75-inch (781 mm) scale runs to a 40 mm GraphTech Black Tusq XL nut. Two Dyna Rail Viking® Bass humbucking pickups — one at the neck position, one at the bridge — feed into a 6-way rotary selector that cycles through six distinct configurations: neck and bridge in humbucking mode, bridge humbucker alone, neck humbucker alone, neck and bridge using outer single-coil coils, bridge outer coil alone, and neck outer coil alone. Independent volume and tone controls are provided for each pickup. The Long Travel Tune-O-Matic bridge pairs with a Hagstrom trapeze tailpiece, and tuning is handled by Hagstrom-design 17:1 ratio tuning keys. The instrument was strung from the factory with .45–.95 gauge strings. Compatible optional soft and hard cases were offered under the B41 and B62 designations respectively.
