Hagstrom built the Viking as a semi-hollow electric guitar positioned alongside the solid-body Swede and Super Swede within the Hagstrom range. The model carried the designation VIK-WHT-U and was finished in White Gloss.
The Viking's body combined a laminated maple construction with a solid center sustain block, paired with a hard-maple set neck anchored by Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod system. The 24.75-inch scale neck featured a 15-inch radius fingerboard in Resinator™ with 22 medium jumbo frets, 6 mm pearl dot inlays, and a 43 mm GraphTech Black Tusq XL nut. Two Hagstrom HJ-50 humbucking pickups were wired to a 3-way toggle selector, two volume controls, and two tone controls. The bridge was a long-travel tune-o-matic paired with a Hagstrom trapeze tailpiece, and tuning was handled by Hagstrom-design 18:1 ratio tuning keys. The guitar shipped strung with D'Addario EXP 110 (.010–.046) strings. Compatible optional cases included the C55 hard case and the E25 bag.
