Hagstrom developed the Fantomen as a collaboration with the Swedish band Ghost, positioning it as a departure into edgier aesthetic territory while retaining the construction standards that defined Hagstrom's instrument line. The model carried the Swedish word for "The Phantom" and was built around an asymmetrical single-cutaway solid mahogany body joined to a mahogany neck via a mortise-and-tenon set-neck joint.
The Fantomen's neck employed Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod system and a Resinator™ fingerboard, features Hagstrom described as contributing to playing-surface stability and tonal consistency. The 25.5" scale ran across 22 medium-jumbo frets at a 15" radius, with a 43 mm Graph Tech™ Black TUSQ XL nut. Pickups were specified by Lundgren Design: an AlNiCo-2 No. 2 humbucker at the neck and an AlNiCo-5 No. 5 humbucker at the bridge, selected by a 3-way toggle. The control layout provided two volume controls fitted with R/C circuits and two push-pull tone controls wired for coil-splitting. A long-travel Tune-O-Matic bridge paired with a stoptail, and Hagstrom's 18:1 die-cast tuning keys completed the hardware. The body carried multiply binding, and Hagstrom pearl block inlays marked the Resinator™ board. D'Addario 10-46 strings were fitted at the factory.
Owners requiring setup work, fret maintenance, or assistance sourcing compatible replacement hardware — including the long-travel Tune-O-Matic bridge or Lundgren-specification pickups — should consult a qualified guitar technician or luthier familiar with set-neck instruments.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
