Hagstrom developed the Super Swede Bass as one of the final projects before Swedish production ceased. The design originated from a collaboration between Hagstrom's chief guitar designer Per-Åke Olsson and Rutger Gunnarsson, bassist for ABBA. Gunnarsson used the instrument throughout ABBA's final North American tour in September/October 1979. Only 364 examples were produced before Hagstrom ended guitar production in Sweden, and the original run has since become a sought-after collector's piece. This reissue carries the SUSWEB-BLK-U designation and presents the instrument in Black Gloss, built around the original 1980 double-cutaway Super Swede Bass design with a neck-through-body construction.
The all-mahogany body feeds into a neck-through construction with a deep "D" profile neck made from Resinator™, topped by a Resinator™ fretboard with Hagstrom Perloid block inlays across 20 medium-jumbo frets. The 34-inch scale runs to a Graph Tech™ Black Tusq XL nut at 40 mm width, and the 15-inch radius fretboard is managed by Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod system. Two Hagstrom Design J-Quad pickups — quad-stacked humbuckers — drive a straightforward control layout of two volume knobs and one tone knob, all fitted with chrome knobs. Hagstrom's own 21:1 tuning pegs handle tuning stability, and the bridge uses individual adjustable direct-mount saddles. The instrument ships strung with D'Addario strings gauged 55–105.
Owners requiring setup adjustments, fret work, or hardware replacement should consult a qualified guitar technician, who can advise on compatible parts given the instrument's through-neck construction and Hagstrom-specific components.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
