Hagstrom produced the Super Swede Bass as one of their final projects before Swedish guitar production ceased. The design originated from a collaboration between Hagstrom's chief guitar designer Per-Åke Olsson and Rutger Gunnarsson, bassist for the Swedish group ABBA. Gunnarsson used the instrument throughout ABBA's final North American tour in September and October 1979. Only 364 examples were produced before Hagstrom ended guitar manufacturing in Sweden, and the model has since become a sought-after collector's piece. The SUSWEB-NMG-U is Hagstrom's reissue of that original 1980 design, rendered in Natural Mahogany.
The bass is built on a neck-through-body construction in a double-cutaway configuration following the original Super Swede Bass outline. The neck carries Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod system and is shaped to a deep "D" profile, with a 34-inch scale and a 40 mm nut machined from Graph Tech™ Black TUSQ XL. The Resinator™ fretboard runs 15-inch radius and carries 20 medium-jumbo frets dressed with Hagstrom Perloid block inlays. Tuning duties fall to Hagstrom's own 21:1 ratio pegs. Pickup configuration comprises two Hagstrom Design J-Quad pickups — quad-stacked humbuckers in a J-bass footprint — controlled by two volume knobs and a single tone knob fitted with chrome hardware. The bridge uses Hagstrom individual adjustable direct-mount saddles. Factory strings are D'Addario gauged 55–105.
Owners seeking setup adjustments, fret work, or compatible replacement hardware for the direct-mount saddle system or Graph Tech nut should consult a qualified bass guitar technician familiar with neck-through instruments.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
