Description

Hagstrom built the H8II-BLK-U as part of its RetroScape series, positioning it as an authentic re-issue of the H8, the brand's original 8-string bass first released in 1967. Hagstrom was the first brand to mass-produce an 8-string bass in that configuration, and the RetroScape H8II revisits that design directly — a double-cutaway mahogany instrument carrying the same 8-string, octave-paired format as its predecessor.

The bass runs a 30.75" (781 mm) scale on a Resinator™ fretboard with a 15" radius and "C" profile neck, stabilised by Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod system. Twenty-one frets are marked with Hagstrom Perloid dot inlays, and the nut is a 40 mm Graph Tech™ Black Tusq XL unit. Two Hagstrom DynaRail Humbucker pickups feed a control layout that includes a single volume knob with push/pull coil split, a kill switch on the upper bout, and a four-switch bank governing neck on/off, bridge on/off, master tone (off/mid and high cut), and a mute with gain reduction and high cut. Strings pass through the body via a Hagstrom Adjustable String-Through Body bridge, and the headstock carries four Hagstrom 18:1 chrome die-cast tuners alongside four Hagstrom Design 22:1 tuning pegs for the octave strings. The instrument ships with custom octave-paired string gauges: E .090/.052, A .065/.038, D .050/.023, and G .040/.013. Multi-ply binding finishes the body edges. Optional hard case B-60 and gig bag B-40 are listed as compatible accessories.

Owners sourcing replacement strings, nut blanks, or bridge saddles should confirm measurements against the existing hardware before ordering; a qualified guitar technician or luthier can assist with setup and any octave-string intonation work specific to this instrument.

The owner archive

From the people who own them

Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.

Put yours on the record.

The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.

What do you know about this one?

Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
