The base plate is the foundation of the tremolo — saddles, sustain block, fine tuners and mounting hardware all bolt to it. This is the Floyd Rose Special series replacement in black nickel hardened steel. It exists to solve one problem: worn knife edges. The knife edges are machined into this plate, and they are the first thing to fail on a well-used Floyd Rose. Once they round over, the bridge loses its pivot point and will not return to pitch. No spring adjustment, no nut lubrication, no setup trick fixes that. The plate comes out and a new one goes in.

Fit is not flexible. This plate is cut for the Special series and it accepts Special series components only — saddles, sustain block, string-lock hardware and tension plates from other Floyd Rose series do not transfer across. If your existing plate is Special series, the swap is direct. If you are not certain which series your bridge is, look at the saddle stamp or the block casting before ordering. A wrong-series plate leaves you with a pile of parts that do not assemble.

The plate is hardened steel with a black nickel finish. Hardened steel is what Floyd Rose specifies for the knife edges — softer material wears faster under the load cycling a floating bridge sees every time the arm is used.
