When studs wear, round off, or get swapped for the wrong diameter, the bridge loses its pivot point — and the guitar stops returning to pitch. Fit is determined by the insert already pressed into your body, not by the bridge itself. Stud and insert diameters vary between the Special series and other Floyd Rose lines, and between metric and imperial bodies. Before ordering, identify which insert is in your guitar. If the wrong stud goes in, it will either sit loose or not thread at all. Pulling an installed insert to swap it is a bench job — not a string change.

The studs are hardened steel. That matters because the knife edges bear down on this surface under string tension every time the arm is used. A soft stud wears a groove into the pivot point and the tuning instability that follows is often mistaken for a bridge or nut problem.
