Ibanez built the AF200BS as part of the AF Artstar Series, a line that positioned hollow body electric guitars toward players seeking a premium, fully hollow construction. The AF200BS occupied an elevated tier within the Artstar range, distinguished by its use of high-grade tonewoods and detailed craftsmanship throughout.
The guitar was constructed with a spruce top and figured Anigre back and sides, paired with a three-piece African Mahogany and Maple set-in neck finished with a bound ebony fretboard carrying acrylic and abalone block inlays. Twenty medium frets with Prestige fret edge treatment ran a 628mm (24.7") scale, with a 305mm radius and a 43mm bone nut. The ebony bridge and AF Special tailpiece handled string anchoring, with a 10.4mm string spacing. Electronics consisted of two passive, Alnico-loaded Super 58 humbuckers at neck and bridge positions, and all hardware appeared in gold. Factory stringing was .011–.050, tuned to standard pitch. Body dimensions placed the width at 16½", maximum depth at 3¾", and length at 20", with neck thickness measuring 20mm at the first fret and 22mm at the ninth.
