Ibanez built the AS153AYS as part of the AS Artstar Series, positioning it at the upper tier of their hollow body electric line. The Artstar designation marked Ibanez's commitment to professional-grade construction and tonewoods within this family.
The guitar was constructed with a three-piece Nyatoh/Maple set-in neck and a flamed Maple top, back, and sides. The bound Ebony fretboard carried acrylic and abalone block inlays across 22 medium frets, finished with Artstar fret edge treatment. A bone nut sat at 43mm width, feeding a 628mm (24.7") scale. The Gibraltar Artist bridge paired with a Quik Change III tailpiece at a string spacing of 10.5mm. Both pickup positions received Super 58 humbuckers — passive, Alnico-loaded units — and all hardware was finished in gold. Neck thickness measured 21mm at the first fret and 24mm at the ninth, with a 305mm radius fretboard and a body depth of 2 5/8".
Owners requiring setup assistance, fret work, or help sourcing compatible parts — including standard tune-o-matic-style bridge saddles compatible with the Gibraltar Artist platform, or Quik Change III tailpiece hardware — should consult a qualified luthier or guitar technician familiar with hollow body instruments.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
