Ibanez produced the RG550DY as part of the RG Genesis Collection, a series that revisited the foundational RG platform. The RG550DY carried the Desert Sun Yellow finish and sat within a line intended to reintroduce the classic RG architecture to players familiar with the model's original run.
The guitar was built around a basswood body mated to a five-piece Maple/Walnut Super Wizard neck — a profile engineered for speed and low mass. The maple fretboard carries black dot inlays and is fitted with jumbo frets across a 430mm radius. The scale length runs 648mm (25.5"), with a nut width of 43mm and a thickness of 17mm at the first fret tapering to 19mm at the twelfth. String spacing at the bridge is 10.8mm. The Edge tremolo bridge — one of the RG platform's defining components — handles vibrato duties and accepts standard Edge-series saddles and posts. Pickup configuration is HSH: a ceramic-loaded V7 humbucker at the neck, an Alnico S1 single-coil in the middle position, and an Alnico V8 humbucker at the bridge, all passive. Hardware throughout is finished in black.
Owners requiring setup work, tremolo calibration, or parts sourcing for the Edge bridge system or the V7/S1/V8 pickup set should consult a qualified guitar technician familiar with double-locking tremolo systems.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
