Ibanez positioned the RG550LDY within the RG Genesis Collection, a series that revisited the foundational specifications of the RG line. The RG550 designation placed it among the core RG instruments, built around the hallmarks that defined the platform: a fast neck profile, a floating tremolo system, and an HSH pickup configuration.
The guitar was constructed with a basswood body and a five-piece Maple/Walnut Super Wizard neck, with a Maple fretboard dressed with black dot inlays and jumbo frets. The nut width measured 43mm, tapering to 58mm at the 24th fret, with a neck thickness of 17mm at the first fret and 19mm at the twelfth, over a 430mmR radius. Scale length ran 648mm (25.5"). The Edge tremolo bridge, with 10.8mm string spacing, remained the centrepiece of the platform. Pickups followed an HSH layout: a ceramic-loaded passive V7 humbucker at the neck, a passive Alnico S1 single-coil in the middle position, and a passive Alnico V8 humbucker at the bridge. All hardware was finished in black.
