Ibanez built the M8M as a signature-series eight-string electric guitar, positioning it within the Prestige-level tier of the extended-range line. The neck-through construction anchored an alder wing body, with a five-piece Maple/Jatoba neck carrying Ibanez's M8M neck profile. The Prestige fret edge treatment was applied to 24 jumbo frets on a rosewood fretboard with a 400mm radius.
The guitar was strung for an F-to-D# factory tuning across its eight strings, using Dunlop strings gauged .009/.011/.016/.026/.036/.046/.052/.070 at a 29.4-inch scale. A single Lundgren Model M8 passive ceramic humbucker occupied the bridge position. String spacing at the FX Edge III-8 bridge measured 10.8mm, and all hardware was finished in black. Neck dimensions measure 55mm width at the nut, 80mm at the 24th fret, 19.5mm thickness at the first fret, and 21.5mm at the twelfth fret.
