The Schecter 6488 MonsterTone-J is a replacement pickup set for bass guitar, covering both bridge and neck positions in a single calibrated pair. Each pickup is a tapped design — two distinctly numbered coils wound into one bobbin — which gives you full-power output or a lower tapped output depending on how you wire it. The wiring harness is 3-conductor, Teflon-coated. Bridge output measures 6.0k ohms; neck measures 5.8k ohms. The magnet is a Ceramic 8, direct-coupled. Pole pieces are eight nickel-plated carbon steel, each 0.25" diameter. The bobbin material is vulcanized fiberboard.

Two things decide whether this set fits your instrument: pole spacing and string count. The bridge pickup is spaced at 57mm universal spacing; the neck pickup at 55mm universal spacing. If the spacing does not match your existing pickups, the outer strings will sit off-axis from the pole pieces. These are six-string-count pickups — not interchangeable with a four-string or five-string route. Also check your mounting situation: direct-mount bodies and ring-mount bodies need different hardware, and this set will not come with both.

The failure mode on old J-style pickups is usually a cracked bobbin or a coil that reads open on one tap but not the other. If your existing pickup checks out on a meter at full power but drops out on the tapped position, that is a coil issue, not a potentiometer issue — this set addresses it at the source.
