Schecter positioned the J-4 as a four-string, bolt-on bass within its production lineup, built around an alder body with a maple neck and rosewood fretboard. The instrument was manufactured in Indonesia and offered in a Gloss Black finish with matching black hardware throughout.
The neck carries a Thin 'C' profile measuring .787" at the first fret and .866" at the twelfth, flattening out over a 16" fretboard radius — a combination suited to players who favour a fast, low-action setup. Twenty-one narrow extra-jumbo frets sit over offset/reverse dot inlays, and the headstock is fitted with Schecter tuners. The nut is a Graph Tech XL Ivory Tusq at 1.496" width, and the truss rod is a two-way adjustable unit accessed via a heel-mounted spoke wheel. Both pickup positions carry Schecter USA MonsterTone-J™ single-coil-format pickups, wired to a Volume/Volume/Tone layout; the tone knob is a push-pull that engages a coil-tap function. The bridge is a Schecter Custom Bass unit that accepts either string-through-body or top-load stringing. Controls use metal knurled knobs secured with set screws. The J-4 shipped with Ernie Ball 4 String Super Long strings (.045–.105); a case was sold separately under the SGR-UNIVERSAL BASS designation.
