Schecter positioned the J-5 (item 2913) as a five-string, single-cutaway-style bolt-on bass within its production line, built in Indonesia with an alder body and a maple neck finished with a rosewood fretboard. The instrument carried Schecter's Thin 'C' neck profile and a 35-inch scale length, placing it firmly in the extended-range bass category intended for players requiring lower register reach.
The neck runs 21 narrow X-jumbo frets over a 16-inch radius rosewood board with offset/reverse dot inlays, and is anchored by a 2-way adjustable truss rod accessible via a heel-mounted spoke wheel. The nut is a Graph Tech XL Ivory Tusq unit at 1.771 inches wide. Neck thickness measures .787 inches at the first fret and .866 inches at the twelfth. Both pickup positions carry Schecter USA MonsterTone-J™ single-coil-format pickups, and the control layout runs Volume/Volume/Tone with a push-pull coil-tap on the tone pot. The Schecter Custom Bass bridge accepts either string-through-body or top-load stringing. Hardware throughout is finished in black, including the metal knurled set-screw knobs and Schecter-branded tuners. The instrument shipped strung with Ernie Ball 5-String Super Long sets (#2850, .045–.130). A case was not included and was sold separately (SGR-UNIVERSAL BASS).
