Hagstrom built the Ultra Max as a single-cutaway electric sharing the compact body concept of the Ultra Swede, but with a slightly larger mahogany body carrying a thick custom carved flame maple top. The model sat within Hagstrom's Ultra series and was finished in Golden Eagle Burst. A mahogany set neck joins the body via a mortise and tenon joint at a 25.50-inch scale length.
The neck carries Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod and a Resinator™ fingerboard with pearloid block inlays, a 15-inch radius, 22 medium jumbo frets, and a 43 mm GraphTech Black Tusq XL nut. The UltraSlim "D" profile neck is topped with white perloid body binding. Two Custom 60 AlNiCo-5 humbuckers with brushed aluminum covers route through a 3-way toggle switch and a single tone control with a push-pull coil-split. Hardware includes a Long Travel Tune-O-Matic bridge, a Hagstrom Sustain Block tailpiece, and Hagstrom Design 15:1 tuning keys. The guitar was strung with D'Addario 10-46s. Compatible optional cases were listed as the C53 hard case and E20 bag.
