Hagstrom positioned the Ultra Max as a companion to the Ultra Swede, sharing the same small-body concept but with a slightly larger mahogany body topped with a thick custom carved flame maple top. The single-cutaway instrument carried a mahogany set neck joined via a mortise and tenon joint, and was finished in a Cosmic Black Burst Satin.
The neck featured Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod, a Resinator™ fingerboard with a 15" radius and pearloid block inlays, a 43 mm GraphTech Black Tusq XL nut, and a 25.50" (648 mm) scale length across 22 medium jumbo frets — all in the UltraSlim "D" profile. Hardware consisted of a Long Travel Tune-O-Matic bridge, Hagstrom Sustain Block tailpiece, and Hagstrom Design 15:1 tuning keys. Two Custom 60 AlNiCo-5 humbuckers with brushed aluminum covers were wired to a 3-way toggle switch and a single tone control with a push-pull coil split, allowing each humbucker to be split to a single-coil configuration. White perloid body binding completed the trim. The guitar shipped with D'Addario 10-46 strings.
