Hagstrom built the Ultra Max as part of its Ultra series, positioning it above the Ultra Swede with a slightly larger mahogany body capped by a thick custom carved flame maple top. The model carried a single-cutaway style and employed a mortise and tenon set neck joint, also in mahogany, mating to a 25.50" (648 mm) scale Resinator™ fingerboard with an H-Expander™ truss rod and UltraSlim "D" profile neck.
Hardware centred on a Long Travel Tune-O-Matic bridge paired with a Hagstrom Sustain Block tailpiece, anchored by Hagstrom Design 15:1 tuning keys. Two Custom 60 AlNiCo-5 humbuckers with brushed aluminium covers fed a straightforward control layout: a 3-way toggle selector, one volume, and one tone control with a push-pull coil split. The 22 medium-jumbo frets sat on a 15" radius board with pearloid block inlays, bounded by a 43 mm GraphTech Black Tusq XL nut and white perloid body binding. The guitar shipped strung with D'Addario 10-46s.
Owners requiring setup work, fret attention, or guidance on sourcing compatible parts — including Long Travel Tune-O-Matic saddles, Resinator™ board treatments, or GraphTech Black Tusq XL nut blanks — should consult a qualified guitar technician familiar with set-neck instruments.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
