Hagstrom built the PASS-BLK-U as a signature electric guitar for Pat Smear, who had played Hagstrom instruments since the 1970s. The model sat within Hagstrom's artist signature range and reflected the long association between Smear and the brand across his work with The Germs, Nirvana, and Foo Fighters.
The guitar features a custom carved maple top over a Resinator™ fretboard mounted on a set neck with an H-Expander™ truss rod. The fretboard runs a 15" radius across 22 medium jumbo frets, with Hagstrom Pearl Block inlays and a 43 mm Graph Tech™ Black Tusq XL nut. Pickups are two Hagstrom Custom 58 AlNiCo units selected by a 3-way toggle switch, controlled by two volume and two tone pots. The bridge is a Long Travel Tune-O-Matic Roller Bridge paired with a Hagstrom Stop tailpiece fitted with brass string blocks. Tuning is handled by Hagstrom 18:1 die-cast machines. The guitar shipped set up with .010–.046 strings. Compatible optional hard case is the C-50; the E-20 bag also fits the instrument.
Owners sourcing replacement parts — particularly the Graph Tech nut, Tune-O-Matic saddles, or string blocks — should bring measurements from the instrument itself and consult a qualified guitar technician to confirm compatibility before fitting.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
