Hagstrom built the HIIN-BLK-U as part of its Retroscape line, positioning it as a double-cutaway solid-body electric with a vintage-influenced feature set. The instrument carried a bolt-on Hard Maple neck joined to an American Alder body finished in Black Gloss, with a 24.75-inch scale length and Hagstrom's H-Expander truss rod system.
The Resinator fretboard was radiused at 15 inches and fitted with 22 medium-jumbo frets, thumbnail inlays, and a 43 mm TUSQ nut. Two passive Alnico V humbuckers — one at the neck, one at the bridge — ran in parallel and were governed by individual volume and tone controls plus a kill switch, with no coil-tap or coil-split facility. Hardware was finished in nickel and included a Tune-O-Matic bridge with roller saddles, a Vintage Tremar tailpiece, and die-cast tuning machines.
