Hagstrom produced the HJ800 as a hollow-body jazz electric bearing the design influence of Jimmy D'Aquisto, whose work is credited throughout the instrument's architecture. The guitar sat in Hagstrom's line as a premium hollow-body offering, distinguished by its solid spruce top and a neck-body joint positioned at the 16th fret.
The HJ800 was built around a 25-inch (635 mm) scale length with a 15-inch fretboard radius and 22 medium jumbo frets. The neck is set rather than bolted, and Hagstrom fitted it with their proprietary H-Expander™ truss rod and a Resinator™ fingerboard carrying pearl block inlays. The nut is a GraphTech Black Tusq XL unit at 43 mm width. Electronics consist of two Hagstrom Custom 58 pickups selected by a 3-way toggle switch, with independent volume and tone controls for each pickup. The bridge is a Resonator Jimmy paired with a Hagstrom trapeze tailpiece, and tuning is handled by Hagstrom Design machines with an 18:1 ratio. The instrument shipped strung with D'Addario EXP 115 (11–49) strings. Compatible optional soft case and hard case were listed as the E26 bag and C56 case respectively.
Owners seeking setup adjustments, fret work, or compatible replacement parts — including GraphTech Black Tusq XL nuts, trapeze tailpiece hardware, or D'Addario EXP 115 strings — should consult a qualified luthier or guitar technician familiar with hollow-body instruments.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
