Hagstrom introduced the H-III in 1965, positioning it alongside the H-II as part of a range noted for its distinctive switching layout and reputation for easy playability. The model gained a following among punk and grunge players over the years, and Hagstrom later reissued the design under the Retroscape series as a recreated and updated version of the original. The HIII-WHT-U is a double-cutaway, bolt-on neck electric finished in white.
The neck is built from Resinator™ material and features Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod, a 15-inch radius, 22 medium-jumbo frets at a 24.75-inch (628 mm) scale, and a 43 mm GraphTech Black Tusq XL nut. Three Hagstrom Ceramic C-Spin pickups feed a switching system that provides individual on/off control for the neck, middle, and bridge pickups, plus a master tone switch, a mute switch, and a bass-cut switch — the arrangement that defined the original H-series layout. A single volume control incorporates an R/C tone circuit. Hardware includes a Long Travel T-O-M Roller Bridge, a Hagstrom Vintage Tremar tailpiece, and Hagstrom 15:1 die-cast machine keys. D'Addario EXP 110 strings (10–46) are fitted as standard, and the instrument ships with an E-20 bag; a C-49 case is listed as an optional accessory.
