Hagstrom built the HIII-ABE-U as part of the Retroscape series, a recreated and updated revival of the H-III model first introduced in 1965. The H-III sat in Hagstrom's line as a distinctive double-cutaway electric, recognised for its array of individual pickup and tone switches and a reputation for easy playability. The Retroscape edition carried forward the character of the original while incorporating updated hardware and materials.
The guitar is constructed with a Resinator™ fingerboard material and a bolt-on neck equipped with Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod system. The 24.75" (628 mm) scale runs across 22 medium jumbo frets on a 15" radius board, with a 43 mm GraphTech Black Tusq XL nut and 6 mm pearl dot inlays. Three Hagstrom Ceramic C-Spin pickups are controlled through individual neck, middle, and bridge on/off switches alongside a master tone switch, a mute switch, and a bass-cut switch, with a single volume control incorporating an R/C tone circuit. The Long Travel T-O-M Roller Bridge pairs with a Hagstrom Vintage Tremar tailpiece, and Hagstrom 15:1 die cast machine keys handle tuning. Strings fitted were D'Addario EXP 110 (10–46). The guitar shipped with an E-20 bag; a C-49 case was available as an optional accessory.
Owners seeking setup adjustments, replacement parts compatible with the Long Travel T-O-M Roller Bridge or Hagstrom Vintage Tremar, or guidance on the H-Expander™ truss rod system should consult a qualified guitar technician or luthier familiar with vintage-style hardware.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
