All-Tube Bass Amplifier Head
Description

Ampeg produced the SVT-CL-U as the flagship of its Classic Series all-tube bass amplifier heads, positioning it as a direct continuation of the vintage Ampeg SVT lineage. The model was aimed at players seeking the authentic tube tone that the original SVT bass heads established, and it sat at the top of the Classic Series range.

The SVT-CL-U ran a full tube complement throughout: two 12AX7s in the preamp, a 12AX7 and two 12AU7s in the driver stage, and six 6550 power tubes delivering 300 watts RMS into both 2-ohm and 4-ohm loads. The front-end offered a three-band tone stack with a five-position mid-frequency selector, plus switchable Ultra High and Ultra Low filters for extended tonal shaping. Connectivity was broad for a head of this type, with a balanced line output, preamp out and power amp in jacks, and a slave output. The unit measured 24 × 11.5 × 13 inches and weighed 80 pounds.

Owners sourcing replacement power or preamp tubes, or setting bias after a retube, should consult a qualified amplifier technician familiar with high-voltage all-tube circuits to ensure correct and safe operation.

From the people who own them

Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.

Put yours on the record.

The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.

What do you know about this one?

Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
