The string retainer sits behind the locking nut and pulls the strings down into it. Without enough break angle across the nut, strings lift out of their saddles during a hard dive and the bridge stops returning to pitch. This is the Floyd Rose 1000 Series replacement, finished in satin black, and it ships with its mounting screws.
Fit turns on two things: mounting hole spacing and the height the retainer sits at. Hole spacing is series-specific — this part is cut for Floyd Rose 1000 Series systems. If your headstock already has a 1000 Series retainer, this is a direct swap. If you are fitting one for the first time, or replacing a retainer from a different series, check that the spacing matches before you order. Height matters too: the retainer has to press the strings far enough into the nut that they lock and release cleanly, but not so far that tuning is pulled sharp at the nut before the lock goes on. If you are shimming the nut to change height, account for what that does to the break angle.
The retainer is steel with a satin black finish. Satin holds up better than gloss in this position — the strings run across it on every restring and a mirror finish wears through fast in that spot.
If you are not certain this fits your setup, send us the make, model and year of the guitar and we will confirm before you order.
