Ibanez built the SR500EBM as part of the SR (Soundgear) Series, positioning it as a mid-tier four-string electric bass within that line. The SR Series was developed around a slim, lightweight profile intended to reduce fatigue during extended play, and the SR500EBM sat above the entry-level SR models while sharing the line's characteristic emphasis on fast playability and active electronics.
The bass was constructed with an Okoume body and a five-piece Jatoba/Walnut neck — a laminated construction Ibanez designated SR4 — paired with a Jatoba fretboard carrying abalone oval inlays across 24 medium frets. The 34-inch scale runs to a nut width of 38mm, tapering to a 19.5mm thickness at the first fret and 21.5mm at the twelfth, with a 305mm radius. Electronics consisted of a pair of passive Bartolini BH2 pickups at neck and bridge positions, fed into Ibanez's own Custom Electronics 3-band EQ. That preamp included an EQ bypass switch — routing signal through a passive tone control on the treble pot — and a 3-way mid-frequency selector, giving the owner considerable tonal range without leaving the passive Bartolini signal chain. The Accu-cast B500 bridge set string spacing at 19mm. Hardware throughout was finished in black. The instrument left the factory strung with D'Addario EXL165s gauged .045/.065/.085/.105 in standard E tuning.
Owners sourcing replacement parts should note that the Accu-cast B500 bridge, Bartolini BH2 pickups, and the plastic nut are each discrete components with their own replacement specifications; a qualified guitar technician or luthier can assist with confirming compatibility before any parts are fitted.
