Ibanez built the SR1605BTSF as part of the SR Premium Series, a five-string electric bass positioned in the upper tier of the SR line. The model carried Nordstrand Big Single passive pickups at both neck and bridge positions, paired with Ibanez Custom Electronics active three-band EQ that included an EQ bypass switch — allowing the instrument to be played fully passive — and a passive tone control on the treble pot. A three-way mid-frequency switch gave the player additional tonal shaping beyond a standard bass/mid/treble stack.
The neck was an Atlas-5 five-piece construction using Panga Panga and Purpleheart timbers, stabilised by KTS Titanium rods. The bound Panga Panga fretboard carried abalone oval inlays, 24 medium frets with premium edge treatment, and a 305mm radius. Nut width measured 45mm, width at the 24th fret 68mm, and thickness ran 19.5mm at the first fret rising to 21.5mm at the twelfth, across a 34-inch scale. The MR5S bridge was set to a 16.5mm string spacing. The body combined an African Mahogany core with a Poplar Burl top, finished in Tropical Seafloor Flat. Hardware throughout was black. The instrument shipped strung with D'Addario EXL165 strings gauged .045/.065/.085/.105/.130, with the factory tuning B–E–A–D–G.
Owners seeking replacement parts — including the Graph Tech BLACK TUSQ XL nut, MR5S bridge components, or Nordstrand Big Single pickups — or requiring setup and fret work should consult a qualified guitar technician or luthier familiar with multi-string bass instruments.
STRAIGHT TALK
What Stands Out
Keep In Mind
From the people who own them
Nothing in The Vault is for sale. These records exist so the instruments stay documented after the manufacturer moves on — and the most useful part of that record is what owners add to it.
Owner photos
Put yours on the record.
The catalog shot showed one finish, under one light, a long time ago. Yours has been played. Photos from owners are what the next person finds when they are trying to identify a part, match a finish, or work out whether the one they just bought is really what the seller said it was.
What do you know about this one?
Specs only go so far. What actually fits, what breaks first, what the factory got right and what everyone ends up changing — that lives with the people who own them, not in a datasheet. Post what you know and it stays on this page for whoever comes looking next.
