Hagstrom built the Ultra Max as a development of the Ultra Swede concept, retaining that model's small-body format while scaling the mahogany body slightly larger and topping it with a thick custom carved flame maple cap. It sat within Hagstrom's Ultra series as a set-neck, single-cutaway instrument, joining body to neck via a mortise and tenon joint at a 25.50" (648 mm) scale length.
The mahogany neck carries Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod and a Resinator™ fingerboard radiused at 15", with an UltraSlim "D" profile, 43 mm GraphTech Black Tusq XL nut, pearloid block inlays, and 22 medium jumbo frets. White perloid binding runs the body, and Hagstrom's own 15:1 ratio tuning keys handle the headstock. The pickup complement is two Custom 60 AlNiCo-5 humbuckers fitted with brushed aluminum covers, selected via a 3-way toggle switch; a single tone control with push-pull coil-split functionality completes the electronics layout. The bridge is a Long Travel Tune-O-Matic paired with a Hagstrom Sustain Block tailpiece. D'Addario 10–46 strings were fitted at the factory.
