Hagstrom introduced the Impala as part of a pair of models — alongside the Condor — in 1963, positioning both instruments as forward-looking designs within the electric guitar market of that period. The Retroscape Impala is Hagstrom's reissue of that original model, brought back into production as part of the Retroscape series. It carries the asymmetric double-cutaway body style and the distinctive multi-switch control layout that characterised the original line.
The neck is set into the body and features Hagstrom's H-Expander™ truss rod system, a Resinator™ fingerboard with a 15" radius, 22 medium-jumbo frets, and 6 mm pearl dot inlays across a 43 mm nut width. The GraphTech Black Tusq XL nut sits at a 24.75" (628 mm) scale length. Two Hagstrom AlNiCo-5 Retro-S single-coil-style pickups feed through an unusually granular switching arrangement: each pickup has its own on/off toggle, each has a dedicated tone on/off toggle, and there are separate switches for a mute function and a top (bass cut) circuit — all governed by a single volume control incorporating an R/C tone circuit. The Long Travel T-O-M Roller Bridge pairs with a Hagstrom Vintage Tremar vibrato tailpiece, and tuning stability is handled by Hagstrom 15:1 ratio die-cast machine keys. The guitar ships strung with D'Addario EXP 110 (10–46) strings and includes the E-20 gig bag; the C-48 case is listed as an optional accessory.
