DigiTech positioned the Bass Whammy (BWHAMMY-U) as a pitch shifting effect pedal purpose-built for bass guitar. It carried forward the classic settings of the original Bass Whammy while incorporating updated pitch detection and polyphonic note tracking technology. The unit offered two distinct tracking modes — Classic and Chord — giving the owner the choice between the tracking artifacts characteristic of the original hardware or a smoother polyphonic pitch shift response.
The pedal runs on a 9V DC external adapter and draws fewer than 265 mA, making it compatible with standard pedalboard power supplies. Audio conversion runs at 24-bit depth with a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and the frequency response covers 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The instrument input accepts a 1/4" unbalanced TS connection at up to +5 dBu into 1 MΩ impedance; the output is likewise 1/4" unbalanced TS, rated to +10 dBu at 1 kΩ impedance. A 5-pin DIN MIDI input allows external control of the pedal. The unit measures 6.5" wide by 7.75" deep by 2.5" tall and employs true bypass switching. Signal-to-noise ratio is rated above 105 dB (A-weighted), with THD of 0.004% at 1 kHz.
