Ibanez built the AS73GMPF as part of the AS Series, positioning it as a hollow body electric within the Artcore line. The model carried a set-in neck construction and sat within a range designed around semi- and full-hollow electric guitar formats.
The body was constructed from Linden on the top, back, and sides. The neck, designated AS Artcore type, was made from Nyatoh and carried a bound Walnut fretboard with acrylic block inlays across 22 medium frets. The scale length ran 628mm (24.7"). Nut width measured 43mm, with a neck thickness of 21mm at the first fret and 24mm at the ninth, and a fretboard radius of 305mm. Hardware throughout was finished in gold, including the Gibraltar Performer bridge with 10.5mm string spacing and the Quik Change III tailpiece. Pickups were a matched pair of Classic Elite humbuckers — one at the neck, one at the bridge — both passive, ceramic units. The guitar left the factory strung in standard tuning with a .010–.052 gauge set.
